FF: Chupke Se .... Chapter 1-4

Chupke Se....

Chapter 1:

He still remembered the day as if it were just yesterday. Every little detail, every little thought, and every little word---which is funny because he hadn't thought at that time that that very day would mark the greatest change in his life. He didn't know then that a simple, shy girl would hold so much value in his whole existence. How she would make a place for herself in his life... and in his heart.
It was the spring of 1998, eleven years ago, that Jai Walia first set his eyes on Bani Dixit. He was twenty-four and she sixteen. His father, Uday Walia, was the top businessman in the city of Mumbai at the time and cherished the dream of having his son join him in the family business. Jai was in the midst of completing his business degree to satisfy his father's desire. It was a year into his MBA that he met his good friend, Daksh Dixit, who like him was also studying for his degree. They at first had been good friends who happened to be classmates, but after outings and time went by they became into the best of friends. Their personalities struck and they formed a quick bond. Some time later, Jai had the delight in meeting Daksh's wife, Anamika Dixit, called Annie for short. They were childhood sweethearts and married young. As in the case of Daksh, Jai got well with his friend's wife as well.
This though was a far away time before Jai even knew of the existence of a girl named Bani. It wasn't until two years into his friendship with Daksh that he actually met his younger sister. It was mere chance. And Jai often wonders if he hadn't agreed into going to Daksh's home that day, he may have never had the chance to meet Bani Dixit at all....

***************************************************************************

"Come on yaar, just take a look at me. I look horrible," Daksh had exclaimed to him that day. They were both in Jai's car, coming back straight from class, and since Jai was the driver, Daksh needed to persuade his friend into turning around. Jai, on the other hand, wasn't budging. They were already late as it was and his girlfriend, Roshini, would murder him if he delayed his arrival by anymore. It was her 23rd birthday party and was being held in the late afternoon since she and her family had an evening flight to catch to London.
Daksh: I mean, my shirt has stains on it, my jeans aren't even decent. Do you really want for me to look like a clown at the party? 'I thought that you are my best friend. (pouts)
Jai had grumbled back.
Jai: And I thought you are my best friend'yet here you are, trying to make me even more late than I already am for Rosh's party. She'll kill me. You know how much she stressed that it's important for me to be there for the past few weeks.
Daksh: I think she'd be understanding of the situation. I mean, it's showing up for the party that counts. Does it really matter when you get there?
Jai: (rolls his eyes) You don't take anything seriously, do you? 'Just imagine if it were Annie and you made it to her birthday party an hour and a half later?
Daksh: (his turn to roll his eyes) Please, don't make it so drastic. We're only twenty minutes late. Besides, it won't take that long for me to change my clothes.
Jai: Who do you wish to impress anyway?'You're a married man. Annie would kill you if you were out to flirt with some girls.
Daksh: She'd kill me and then you for even dragging me along to the party in the first place. 'And don't you want for your best friend to set a good image for you at the party?

In between driving, Jai switched his eyes to the left to catch a glimpse of his friend. And to his dismay, Daksh was right' he was a horrible sight. A person could spot those stains a thousand miles away. Unwillingly Jai sighed in defeat and immediately swerved his car to take a U-turn. He threw Daksh an annoyed look.
Jai: (muttering) This better be quick....
****************************************************************************

Whereas Jai came from a wealthy background, his friend did not. Daksh had always been a middle-class man, born and raised. So Jai didn't really know what to expect once he got to the Dixit residence. In the two years Jai was friends with Daksh, he never once had the opportunity of visiting his home. And he neither had Daksh over at his. It was just something they both had never done and didn't mention.
As he pulled up in the driveway like Daksh instructed him to do, Jai took out his key and stepped out from his car. He took a long look at the house before him... A cozy, decent sized white house with black shutters and a front porch. Jai softly smiled at the sight of it. Sure it was no way comparable to his, but it had a certain homey aura around it that he couldn't help but admire.
Daksh: You coming?
Jai turned over to look at his friend, who stared back at him with a strange look. He nodded his head and followed after him. He watched Daksh withdraw a set of keys from his pocket and begin in unlocking the door. Suddenly he heard him say...
Daksh: You should pray that Annie won't be home. Because if she is, we won't be just real late, but miss the entire damn party itself.
Instantly Jai began to pray. They walked in as Daksh swung open the door and let them in. He led Jai to his house's guestroom and told him that he would be back in five minutes. Jai looked on at Daksh's retreating figure for a moment before seating himself down on one of the couches and staring at nothing but the thin air. He folded his hands together and unknowingly began to twiddle with his thumbs, having something to do in the silence of the lone room. He wondered whether Annie was home or not. If she were, then maybe he could have her as company. It was funny that once he was thinking of this, he heard a sudden tinkling come from somewhere. He looked up from his hands and turned to its direction. He heard it again' and could tell it was coming closer. It sounded like anklets. The first thought that came to his mind at that moment was that it was Anamika. But then he thought against it. She was a very modernized girl and he rarely ever saw her with any jewelry on. As he was in the trance of thinking, the approaching chiming came to a stop and Jai raised his eyes to take a look...
There she stood, flat-middle in the entrance way of the room, soaking in the radiance of youth. She had a skinny frame and looked no taller than 5'5". Her wavy black hair ended close to her waist and rested against the support of her back. She had an oval face, small button nose, high cheekbones, and curved lips. Her skin was fair and he pondered whether she stayed indoors most of the time. It was her eyes though that captured his attention. Big honey brown doe-like eyes covered with long, curly eyelashes.
She was dressed simply, yet nicely in a yellow churidar with matching bangles, small jhumkes, and a tiny silver bindi adoring her forehead. In her small hands she held a thali with auspicious belongings.
He didn't know who looked more surprised than the other... him or her. They both were clearly not expecting the other. Before he could even say anything, he watched her place the thali down on a table nearby and look around curiously before changing her attention back onto him, seeming stumped by something. Slowly a sweet smile played on her lips as she looked apologetic for reasons Jai did not know. He cleared his throat and decided to be polite.
Jai: Hello...
Instead of hearing a "hello" in return, what Jai got was a silent "Namaste" greeting with her hands. Taken aback by this, Jai dumbly did the same. He saw with amusement as her smile turned into a laughing grin, but she held it back by biting down on her bottom lip. If Jai wasn't mistaken, he had thought she was trying not to laugh at him.
"Alright, I'm ready...Let's go," he heard Daksh's voice announce as his feet ran down the fleet of stairs. He appeared by the doorway along with his sister and gave her a startled look.
Daksh: Oh, Pari, you're home? I thought you would have left for the mandir by now...
Both Jai and Daksh watched her shake her head in a negative and smile softly, silently indicating something to her older brother that Jai could not catch.
Daksh: Well, be safe. And don't stay there for too long.
She nodded her head, showing that she understood. Daksh caught the curious look on Jai's face and spoke, grabbing his focus.
Daksh: Jai.. this is my baby sister, Bani. She goes to the girl's school just nearby here. ---(turning to Bani) And Bani, this is my very good friend, Jai ' He's studying for his MBA along with me. Won't you greet him?
Before Bani could even react, Jai cut in.
Jai: Er... we already met Daksh...But it's real nice to finally meet you Bani.
Bani simply smiled as a response.
Daksh: Pari, I've got to go to a friend's party. I'll be back in a few hours. Make sure Annie and Papa don't worry. I'll see you later. Bye. (smiles)
Again Bani nodded understandingly and gave her brother a farewell peck on the cheek before picking up her thali and leaving... the tinkling of her bangles and anklets fading away. Jai, for some reason, couldn't keep his eyes off of the girl...Something about her intrigued him. Once Daksh and Jai got back to the car, he spoke in a rather offended tone.
Jai: You never told me you had a sister...
Daksh: (shruggingly) It never seemed to come up. Besides, we don't really talk about our families in the first place, do we?
He couldn't deny him because it was right. Along as not ever being at each other's homes, they also never discussed about their family life. It finally dawned on Jai that his best friend had another life than just the one he knew and was a part of. One he never took the chance to know about. But he would change that. During the car drive to the birthday party, Jai had decided that he would learn more about his best friend's personal life.
Jai: ... Your sister is very quiet.
He had commented at some point on their ride. He listened carefully as Daksh took a few moments to answer him back.
Daksh: That she is...
****************************************************************************
The next day when Jai suggested that they go over to Daksh's house after class instead of the regular cafe they went to, Daksh was unsurprisingly suspicious.
Daksh: You want to come over to my house?
He questioned with surprise. Jai merely shrugged his shoulder nonchalantly.
Jai: Yeah, sure. Why not?
Daksh: You'd rather prefer to go to my house than the cafe? 'Why the sudden change?
Jai: No sudden change. I just feel like going someplace else than the cafe like we always do.
Daksh: Well, there are other places we can go, you know? Why don't we call Adi and meet up in the coffee shop. We haven't seen him in sometime anyways.
Aditya Bali, whom Jai is also very close with, is one of Jai's childhood friends. Once gaining Daksh's friendship, he introduced the two and was pleased that they hit it off well.
Jai: Er...I... I don't know. I feel like that's a little repetitive too.
Daksh: (raising a brow) Then where do you wanna go?
Jai: I'd like it if we just didn't go to any public places. I mean, we go out all of the time. Why don't we just sit and relax somewhere? And what better place than your own home?
Undoubtedly Daksh could tell something was fishy. Jai knew he could never pass anything by him. He was too smart of a man. He immediately gave up with his excuses and confessed what was on his mind. After narrating his thoughts, he watched Daksh wear a serious look on his face, as if taking his suggestion into consideration.
Daksh: I guess you're right. You and I are pretty private about our home lives...I've got nothing to hide. So I don't mind taking you to my house.
And thirty minutes later, Jai and Daksh arrived at his home. For some odd reason, Jai found himself hoping that Bani would be home. He felt that she would be the very first step in finding out about this different side to Daksh. And Daksh seems to keep her very close to his heart, if he isn't mistaken about the pet name "Pari".
Just as Daksh struggled in unlocking the locks, the front door flew open and Anamika stood before them wearing a warm smile on her face.
Annie: Jai, what a surprise! (exclaims)
Jai returned the smile. He was rather fond of his friend's wife.
Jai: I hope not so much of a surprise and that you are willing to let me in?
Annie: Oh, of course not...not that much of a surprise! Come in! Just think of our home as yours too.
Jai: (sincerely) Thanks Annie.
Daksh: Kya Annie, you give Jai such a wonderful greeting but whenever it is me who comes home, you barely acknowledge me.
Annie: Oh Daksh, is that you? I didn't even see you there'. (playing a pretense of naivety)
She smirked at her husband who gave her a frown and followed after Jai and Annie into the house. Annie led them into the family room where she told them to relax and that she would make them some coffee since they are not tea drinking types. While Jai and Daksh immersed themselves into conversation, Jai discovered that he was growing rather comfortable in the environment of his friend's home and regretted never coming before. Then he heard the same familiar tinkling sound from the day before...
He turned his head and watched his friend's sister emerge out from the kitchen adjacent to the family room with a tray full of coffee in her hands and smile politely in his and Daksh's direction. She wore a cotton white churidar that fit her nicely and seemed every bit like an angel. She approached them at the couch and offered the cup of coffee to Jai first. Jai silently took it from her and murmured his thanks. She smiled beautifully as a reply, showing all of her straight pearl white teeth. She then gave her brother his and received an affectionate pat on the head.
Daksh: Thanks Pari'
Bani flashed him a kind smile. Annie's voice then was heard by them all as she screeched for Daksh's presence. Daksh placed his cup down on the table next to him and excused himself.
Daksh: (flustered) Pari, why don't you sit down and give Jai some company for a little bit while I go see quickly what it is that your Bhabhi wants.

Bani nodded her head. Jai wondered if she was always quiet like this or if it was simply by his presence and that she was shy. Daksh left him behind with his shy, quiet sister and nothing to say. He stared up at Bani from his sitting down position and found her mutely staring back at him as well. They both quickly averted their eyes and seemed self conscious of the silence existing between them. Jai then cleared his throat... A normal habit of his when stuck in an awkward position.
Jai: (politely) Please go ahead and sit down Bani...I don't want to make you uncomfortable in your own home.
She obediently listened to his request and sat down on the single chair sofa opposite him. He noted her anxiously wringing her hands and fiddling with her duputta. He rattled through his head for a moment to decide on what to say before gaining the courage to strike a conversation with his friend's sister'.
Jai: Your brother says you go to the school nearby.. Uh, er.. how's that going for you?
She simply looked at him blankly and Jai realized that that might have been a stupid question. He cursed in his mind before saying..
Jai: (nervous chuckle) What am I even saying.. I...er... forget that. It was a stupid question. Of course every normal kid your age hates school. Right?
She shook her head in disagreement and Jai raised a brow.
Jai: So you don't hate it?
She nodded. Jai studied her for a moment before carrying the "conversation" on...
Jai: What is it about school that you like then?
She looked unsure for a second and a flicker of hesitation formed on her face. He decided to prod her on, not wanting her to be shy with him or give her any reason to be so.
Jai: (encouragingly) You can tell me... I promise I won't laugh if you find it embarrassing.. It's normal for kids to like school too...It's just that a majority of them don't. (ends with a light grin)
The corners of her mouth twitched and slowly a smile made its way onto her own mouth. She raised her hands and unexpectedly began to make gestures with them' Her one hand made a sweeping movement back and forth while the other drew a box in the air. Jai threw her a puzzled look that she caught. Her hands momentarily stilled in the air but moved once again as she drew a box and then began to make the sweeping motion in it'  Jai couldn't help but grin a little at the sight. For a moment he felt like he was playing charades with her.
Jai: ' You like to draw?
She stopped moving her hands and nodded in approval. Jai's grin widened from being right.
Jai: ' Do you go to an art school then?
She excitedly nodded her head once more, seeming relieved and glad that he was able to understand her.
Jai: That's great then' I was never much into drawing' nor coloring'
Bani gave him a questioning look that he easily interpreted as, "Why is that?"
Jai: Could never keep in the lines'. (explaining with a friendly wink)
She covered her mouth with her hand and silently laughed into it. A color of pink also stained her cheeks, making them lovelier than they already were.
Jai: (smiling a little at her amusement with him) '. When did you first discover that you liked art?
Suddenly her soundless laughter stopped and she looked pained for a moment. Jai gazed at her with puzzlement as she struggled with her hands to explain. He focused hard on the motion of her hands but wasn't able to figure out what it was she was trying to say. She too seemed a little exasperated in not having him understand her. As much as he was enjoying this charade thing going on, he would rather find out straight away about Daksh's sister than playing games.
Jai: I don't know if it is me that is keeping you quiet' But I just want to say that there is no reason for you to be shy with me. I am hoping we can become friends '.I want you to know that you can talk to me' I would like for us to be comfortable with each other' I hope that's not too much of me to ask?'
Bani's hands dropped to her lap as her eyes stayed rooted onto Jai, deep in trance about something. She lowered her eyes down and tucked a strand of her hair that managed to get loose behind her ear. And exactly what Jai didn't want for to happen, happened. She began to grow uncomfortable. He instantly regretted for even opening his mouth, but before he could apologize, he heard Annie's voice come from behind'
Annie: No, Jai... it isn't too much of you to ask.
He hadn't seen her coming and so was taken by surprise. He watched her make her way in and sit down onto the armchair of the single sofa Bani was seated at. She tenderly placed her arm around her sister-in-law's shoulder and changed her eye's direction back to Jai'.
Annie: (finishing off) But the circumstances can't give you what you want...
Jai: (confused) What do you mean?
Annie gave Bani a side glance at this, as if seeking permission for something, but Bani's eyes stayed glued to the floor. She sighed and stroked Bani's hair while capturing her attention.
Annie: Why don't you go out to the garden, Bani? ... You can take your sketchbook with you if you'd like and draw for a little while... (suggesting sweetly)
Bani gave a faint smile in her sister-in-law's direction and briefly met Jai's curious eyes before willingly leaving her seat as well as the room'.
After she left, Annie turned back to look at Jai and continued on after a hesitant pause. Jai's eyes returned to her as well after following Ban's retreating figure'.
Annie: Jai ...Bani can't speak.

She stated calmly, yet her words seemed to echo in the silence of the room. It took Jai some time to process this before he dumbly responded'
Jai: What do you mean she can't speak?
Annie: ' Bani lost her voice in an accident that took place seven years back. Unfortunately, it was the same accident that she and Daksh lost their mother in. ' Bani and her mother were both coming back from her grandparent's house when their car met into a terrible crash. Kiran Mummyji lost her life in that accident and Bani lost the will to speak after witnessing her mother's death. '. After many examinations, the doctors confirmed that she was impacted greatly from the incident and couldn't speak because of her fear and the heavy loss from her mother's death'We all  tried to encourage her to speak many times'and still do'but it all went to vain . ' She is still scarred by the events of her mother's death' We don't know what it is that she saw or the details of the accident'but whatever it was, it affects her to this day'.  It took some time for all of us to get used to the change in Bani and pick up on learning sign language since that is the only way she can communicate with us now.
Jai sat in the brooding silence, taking in the newly acquired information he received. It all started to make sense'her quiet nature, the nods, and the hand gestures. It wasn't because she was shy' she couldn't speak. He began to feel like an idiot. Here he was, trying to encourage her to speak with him, when she didn't have that power in her, a will that she lost to do with her mother's death.
Jai: I.. I'm sorry... I didn't know...
He found himself apologizing to her. A soft smile adored Annie's face while she looked at him with kind eyes.
Annie: You shouldn't feel sorry and Bani wouldn't want you to be. You didn't know ... What happened to her perhaps was for a reason. You are not to be blamed for her condition nor should you pity for the state she is in.
Jai: Still, I should have asked... I shouldn't have been assuming things that weren't true...I hope she can forgive me.
"It's alright Jai' How could you have known?...  Don't beat yourself up for it," Daksh spoke up out of nowhere. Jai located him at the entranceway, staring at him with a faint smile. He walked into the room, joining his friend and wife.
Daksh: It's actually my fault. I should have told you about Bani's condition but I purposely didn't.... I-I didn't want you to treat her any differently like other people we've come across. Nor did I want to make Bani uncomfortable by me making her state aware to other people. But I know you' you're a good man and also my best friend. Still, I was a little afraid of your reaction and behavior regarding Bani.
Jai stood up from the couch, standing before his friend. He placed a hand on Daksh's shoulder and met his gaze.
Jai: Daksh, yaar... How could you even think like this? It doesn't matter to me if your sister can't speak... Just because she can't doesn't make her any less than everyone else.. I would treat her like I treat anyone else. No special treatment involved. I just wish you would have confided in me about this instead of making me seem like a fool.
Daksh: (smiling) And I'm sorry for that' From now on, I'll try and be more open. I now know that there is no need for me to keep anything from you. You're a good friend, Jai...
Jai smiled along with his friend and gave him a little pompous look.
Jai: That I am...
Together Daksh and Jai chuckled as well as Annie who stood up from her seat and joined them. The sound of bangles moving drew Jai's attention over to the entranceway of the room, where he caught the image of her standing half hidden behind the wall and peering silently into the room. Daksh and Annie followed his gaze of direction and also spotted her nearby, who became startled with everyone's sudden attention shifting to her and guiltily revealed herself.
Annie: (taken aback) Bani.. you didn't leave?
Bani shook her head while her eyes remained down on the ground. After a moment they rise and Jai watched as she expressed something to her sister-in-law. Annie waited patiently while reading her gestures. A light smile tugged on her lips as she turned to look at Jai.
Annie: Jai... Bani says that you are a very nice person and that she is glad her Daksh Bhaiya has a friend like you.
Jai's eyes fell onto her and saw her stand shyly in front of him while her hands fiddled with her duputta. He grinned in Bani's direction and slowly walked forward, approaching her by the entranceway.
Jai: You don't have to use Annie or your brother to communicate with me. I'd prefer if you expressed what you feel to me instead. I may not be able to get what you mean right away... but I will surely learn to understand.
Her silent eyes stared up at him in slight wonder and slowly her face lit up on his words as a soft smile played on her lips. She nodded her head enthusiastically and Jai couldn't help but chuckle a little at her. He brought out a hand, extending it forward and asked'
Jai: Friends?
Her eyes went down to his outstretched hand and back up to meet his own gray ones. Letting her duputta loose, she shyly placed her own hand into his and shook it'.

Chapter 2:
For the next few weeks Jai would regularly visit the Dixit residence simply because he wished too. He met Nishikant Dixit, Daksh's father, once or twice and got with him well. He, though, was usually busy working the majority of the day so was rarely ever seen around. The best part of his frequent visits to his friend's house, really, was meeting Bani. He was growing a soft spot for the girl and noticed that she was becoming more open with him. Even though she couldn't speak, he was learning to understand her clearly without the need of words. It was her eyes that did all of the talking….
Having Daksh grow more open with him about his personal life, Jai felt that he should return the favor. He no longer neglected mentioning his family life and even willingly brought Daksh to his home, who was amazed by the grand size of the place. He overlooked his amazement and secretly preferred Daksh's household over his own. Despite the size of his house, it didn't hold as nearly enough warmth as it did in the Dixit residence.
Soon they approached summer which was normally the time the two friends spent the time most and Jai's visits grew even more…..
****************************************************************************
One afternoon Jai pulled into Daksh's driveway and stepped out from his car. He dug his key into his pocket and just when he was about to knock on the door, it swung open quickly from the other side, revealing a sweet little surprise to him. Bani stood brightly before him, welcoming him with a warm smile. He returned it while affectionately ruffling her hair.
Jai: Looks like someone was waiting for me… (winks)
Bani flushed from his teasing remark but as she flattened down her hair, she glared at him for messing it up in the first place—causing him to laugh.
Jai: So I suppose you won't let me in now?
She hurriedly shook her head and stepped out of the way to let him in. She closed the door after him. As Jai turned to look at her, Bani immediately pointed upstairs… He frowned at her.
Jai: Why do you always assume I am just here to meet Daksh and Annie? Aren't I anything to you either?
Bani dropped her hand to her side and flashed him an apologetic look. She neared him and comfortingly placed her hand on his arm… She pointed to his chest, then to herself, and then clasped both of her hands together. His frown turned upside down back into a smile.
Jai: Good… because we are friends, you know… and always will be.
She beamed at him while leading him further into the house and seating him down in his normal spot on the couch. As he sat down, she gestured upstairs and Jai could clearly tell that she was going to go inform her brother and sister-in-law that he was home. He nodded his head to allow her to go and watched her disappear for a minute before reappearing with a friendly smile. Jai silently patted to the spot next to him where she gladly sat down on.
Jai: My family is very excited to meet all of you tonight. In fact, my Mausi is personally cooking tonight's dinner.
He watched as a confused look formed on her face and he stared at her with momentary disbelief.
Jai: Bani… you do know that you and your family are coming over to my house tonight for dinner, don't you?
The confused look remained on her face while she shook her head in disagreement. A look of annoyance passed by on his features…
Jai: That brother of yours must have forgotten to mention it… Well, now I am telling you. (ending with a friendly smile)
Suddenly he saw a panicked expression build on her worried face. She immediately began to lift up her duputta in his view and pointed to her clothing. He watched this for a couple of seconds before understanding what she was implying… He placed her dupatta back down and reassuringly gripped onto her hands.
Jai: Whatever you wear will be fine… Don't worry about it. It's not a formal dinner. It's just two families who should have met some time back.
She smiled in relief and nodded her head but then again another panic went through her as she began pointing to herself and threw her hands above her head. Again, he brought her hands back down and firmly held her gaze.
Jai: Don't panic… If I like you, then why wouldn't they?
Bani grew relaxed on hearing this and grinned softly at this. She then surprised Jai as she pointed to herself, then took a grip on his nose, shook it fondly, and then pointed to his chest… He chuckled as he wasn't able to understand what she had done.
Jai: Do it once more… I'm not following you here.
Her smiled widened as she repeated her earlier action. She pointed to herself, took a grip on his nose with her small fingers, shook it affectionately, and then poked him lightly in his chest.
Jai: (random guess) …. You –like me?
She excitedly nodded her head and Jai smiled from both getting it right and by what she had said. It was then his turn to surprise her. He pointed to himself, gently took a hold of her nose, shook it in the same tender manner, and then lastly pointed to her. She silently giggled in a pleased manner. His eyes remained on her as she laughed cutely at the whole thing. Unknowingly a smile of his own made its way to his lips.
Jai: …. They're going to love you.
Her silent laughter subsided as she met his gaze and blushed…
*****************************************************************************
After spending the remainder of the afternoon over at his friend's house, he came along with Daksh and his family over to his own house for dinner. On arriving, they were greeted by Jai's butler, Tony, who warmly welcomed them in. Annie and Bani's eyes remained transfixed onto their surroundings, awed by the grand house, while an oblivious Jai led them in to settle down. Suddenly he stopped on approaching a rather spacious room with expensive, lavish furniture and turned to his guests. A smirk crept onto his lips and his eyes contained a certain glint.
Jai: Like I have had the pleasure in knowing your family—tonight, I want you all to experience the same when meeting mine…. They're right in here.
Daksh, Annie, and Bani all followed in after Jai, seeming self-conscious and out of place. Three figures appeared into view who all stood on seeing Jai's friends. One of them, a man who easily could be acknowledged as Jai's father as he resembled him in so many ways, came forth and extended a hand to Daksh.
"Hello, beta. My family and I have heard so much of you from Jai. We are glad to finally meet you… Welcome to our home," he replied hospitably with a friendly smile. Daksh returned the smile and took Uday Walia's hand.
Daksh: We are glad as well Uncle…
Uday stepped aside to show the remaining unknown figures behind him and led Daksh and his family's notice to them.
Uday: This is Jigyasa… my youngest and junior to Jai by three years.

Jigyasa flashed her brother's friend a knowing smile, having met him from before, and his family a warm smile. Uday then directed over to the older woman standing beside Jigyasa, who had certain warmth to her just by the appearance of her.
Uday: And this is my sister-in-law and also Jai's mausi…
Mausi raised her hands in greeting while the rest returned it. Daksh took a slight step forward while meeting his friend's mausi's gaze.
Daksh: (grinning) I have heard a lot about you mausi… Jai mentions you whenever he can and it is clear how much he adores you… I am glad to have finally met my friend's mother….
Mausi's eyes briefly met Jai's on hearing this, looking at loss for words, and Jai could not do anything but smile.
Mausi: (returning his smile) And I am glad on finally meeting my son's friend… He mentions you as well…
Jai stepped in after Mausi patted Daksh's head in an endearing manner. He cleared his throat to gather his family's attention.
Jai: Dad… Mausi… Jigyasa… This is Daksh's wife, Anamika…
He introduced while placing a light touch on her shoulder. Anamika smiled politely at his family as they did as well. He then placed both hands onto Bani's small shoulders and gave them a soft squeeze as he could read the apprehensive look worn on her face.
Jai: And this is Bani…. His younger sister….
Jai's family smiled in her direction at her acknowledgment and to their surprise, she came forth and touched Uday's feet. Stunned, he looked at her as she rose back up but slowly an affectionate smile made its way onto his lips. He lifted his hand to her head and blessed her generously.
Uday: May you always be happy my child…
Bani then turned to mausi and did the same as well. Mausi hurriedly prevented her from doing so by taking a hold of both of her arms and keeping her still. She took in Bani's features and smiled in approval. She surprised Bani as a knowing smile grew on her lips.
Mausi: So this is Bani…
Mausi commented softly. A puzzled expression formed on Bani's face as she threw Jai a look at this, unsure of what his mausi meant by this. Jai, on the other hand, continued to smile and nodded his head in agreement.
Jai: Yes, this is her…
Bani turned back to Mausi who lovingly ran her hand down her silky hair and kissed her tenderly on her forehead.
Mausi: … (explains) I have heard much of you as well… Jai speaks rather highly of you… In fact, he seems to love your whole family by the way he talks about you all…
Jai caught Bani's eye at this who seemed to be growing more and more confused by the second. He contained a smile. Obviously she had no clue he spoke to his mausi of her family. He spoke to his mausi of all things… and lately the past few months it seemed to only be about the discussion of his friend's family. He decided to divert the conversation into settling everyone down so they could all have a nice chat and come together….
****************************************************************************
To Jai's great pleasure, his family and his friend's family got well with one another perfectly. By the end of the evening, it was as if they had all been family friends for years. Daksh had grown relatively close with his father, discussing business and the direction he was planning on going once completing his MBA, Annie meshed well with Mausi whom she was growing to adore as a mother figure, and Bani… well… Bani got along with everyone just great. Be it his father, his mausi, and including his sister who surprisingly stated that Bani was like the sister she never had. It was the fact that they looked pass Bani's disability that secretly pleased him though and accepted her whole heartedly. What could make him happier than this?
Soon midnight struck and the end of their evening had finally arrived. Jai watched closely as they all talked animatedly while getting up from their seats and heading on over to the front door. He saw Bani and Jigyasa walking slowly behind and finally Jigyasa excuse herself after giving Bani a hug to run up and bid Daksh and Annie bye as well. He increased his pace to join her. He caught her off guard as he suddenly took a grip of her arm and pulled her aside. She threw him a questioning look as he held her arms into his hands' possession. A smile made its way onto his handsome face….
Instead of explaining himself to her, like how Bani obviously was waiting for, Jai merely pointed behind him to where his family stood….then turned back to look at her, took a hold of her nose into his fingers… lightly wriggled it back and forth right before ending by poking his index finger at her…
A radiant smile emerged onto her face as she softly giggled at his antic and beamed at him, inwardly pleased by his statement. Jai gave her a chuckle in return and affectionately flicked her on the forehead…
Jai: And you were worried….
Bani continued to giggle and pushed his hand aside. She motioned for him to look at her as she pointed to herself, shook his nose caressingly, and then directed over to his family. It was then Jai's turn to smile…
Jai: (earnestly) I'm glad that you do Bani…. I really am….
****************************************************************************
Like any other day, Jai dropped by the Dixit residence but only briefly as he was waiting for his friend to come with him to attend their morning class. Nishikant Uncle like always wasn't present, Annie left for work early, and Bani had gone to her dance class that she had taken up in the beginning of summer two hours before—leaving the house strangely quiet and lonesome for once. While Daksh was taking his time getting ready upstairs in his bedroom, Jai took the effort into wasting time by venturing into the house's study. He became slightly drawn by the sight of books stacked onto a set of shelves and did not hesitate in going through them. It was midway into his curious search that he came across one book in particular that captured his undivided attention, which had been resting idly on the bottom shelf burrowed under the other stacks of literature. He pulled the brown hard cover book out and ran his fingers down the spine of it before sprawling it open into his hands.
To his amazement, he discovered that he had ended up finding the sign language teaching guide that he was sure the whole family used frequently years ago. Intrigued, he flipped through the pages while intently scanning the images drawn to instruct the art of the language. He had gone far deep into the book that he hadn't even noticed his friend calling out to him and spring upon him unexpectedly in the study….
Daksh: Hey, what're you doing over here?
Jai jumped on hearing his friend and hastily slammed the book close while stealthily trying to slip it away. He turned to face him…
Jai: I was just looking around… I didn't really know how many books you guys had in here.
Daksh: (shrugs) Yeah… We have a little bit of everything. I don't even come in here though. Bani's the only one really who ever spends her time in here and give attention to the books.
Jai looked down at his hand that still firmly gripped onto the book and slowly pulled it out into view.
Jai: …. You don't think she would mind if I wanted to borrow one for some time, do you?
Daksh: I don't know… Which one is it?
Jai: … Oh…. Er…. It's got to deal with getting in touch with one's spirituality?… (meekly)
He hadn't known how he was able to come up with the lie so quickly or why he didn't wish to tell his friend the truth. Perhaps he didn't want Daksh to think that he felt obligated to learn the specific communication skill… He watched his friend throw him a strange look before opening his mouth to obviously mock his "interest" but then thought against it as he closed it. After a short silent moment he spoke…
Daksh: …. You can go ahead and keep it if you'd like… I'm sure no one's going to miss it around here.
*****************************************************************************
Summer passed by as quickly as it came and soon enough everyone was slipping back into their old busy routines. However, one thing would never change—Jai still came and visited the Dixits whenever he could….
*****************************************************************************
It was a Friday night when Daksh invited his friend over to dinner with his family. His father, for once, would also be present and Jai did not hesitate in obliging. It had been quite awhile, a couple of weeks to be exact, since he had seen Daksh's family and he wished to meet them. He was pleased in seeing that Bani hadn't forgotten him as she welcomed him warmly with open arms on opening the front door. He embraced her with the same equal enthusiasm and began to feel a little homesick as it had been some time since he had seen her last. On withdrawing from her, he didn't miss the bright sparkle gleaming in her beautiful eyes and he felt something in him rise on seeing it. Suddenly though he felt her hit him on the shoulder rather roughly, startling him out it.
Jai: Ouch, Bani. That hurts. What is wrong with you?
She stubbornly raised her chin up while meeting his gaze and crossed her arms tightly across her chest. He watched her do this for a short second before reaching out to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. However, she shrugged off his hand leaving Jai to frown at her.
Jai: What's wrong? Why are you so mad at me all of a sudden?
He realized that he shouldn't have asked her this as it only made her angrier than before. She turned on him and began to express a thousand things to her with her hands flying about—his eyes firmly stayed on her as she did this. A few moments later he heard approaching footsteps and looked away to see Annie and Daksh join them at the front door. Bani followed his gaze over to her brother and Bhabhi and immediately put her hands back down to her sides.
Daksh: Hey yaar, when'd you get here?
Daksh asked him before greeting him with a brief hug. As Jai withdrew from it he answered….
Jai: Just now—I got caught up though at the door.
He threw Bani a glance as he said this and saw Daksh follow his gaze over to his grumpy looking sister. Jai watched his friend grin a little while asking…
Daksh: Why, what happened? Why have you made my sister so upset?
Annie: (smiling) You are unable to understand your own sister… She is obviously upset that—
Jai: (intervening) That I haven't dropped by lately to visit …. Even though she knew I was busy…. (throwing Bani another look while saying this) And she went on blasting at me for not coming to meet her and I'm pretty sure she cursed me a couple of times too….
Instead of denying what he had said, Jai saw Bani meet his gaze and look dumbfound. She was still for a complete moment before turning to look at her brother and sister-in-law in an excited manner. A wide smile adorned her lips as she tugged on Annie's arm and pointed at him. Annie shared the same stunned look that Bani wore on her face just a second ago.
Annie: Jai…. How did you… how did you---
Daksh: (finishing for her) –know what she was saying? (disbelief in his voice as well)
Jai stared at them, uncomfortable with their fixed gaze on him, and rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
Jai: Well… er… I've actually been learning sign language… for a little over three months now.
He saw as he further stunned his friends with his confession. Daksh threw him a strange look.
Daksh: But why would you do that? ….—Jai, you don't…. you don't think that you have to learn it just because of Bani, do you?
Jai: No, of course not. I didn't feel obligated in anyway….. I just wanted to learn. And I have…. Well a fair amount of it at least… I'm still learning.
Annie: Jai, you don't have too. It's perfectly fine. We don't want you to think that you do…
Jai: Really Annie, I didn't feel forced that I had to…. I wished to do it. –I found a book in your study about it and well … it interested me. (sheepishly admits)
Daksh: (accusingly) You said that book was about spirituality…
Jai: (shrugs) I lied… I didn't want to tell you because I feared you would react just like this….
Bani then stepped in and motioned a few things to her family before turning to look at Jai with a soft delicate smile that he couldn't help but return.
Annie: She says that she—
Jai: (cutting her off) I know… She's happy that I've learned…
Slowly a smile appeared on Annie's face as she replied with a soft chuckle…
Annie: I guess I'm going to have to stop interpreting for you now then….
Jai watched his friend continued to look at him, speechless, moments before he placed a firm hand onto his shoulder and without any words—expressed his gratitude to him. Jai merely smiled it off and steered away the topic by suggesting…
Jai: Shall we all go inside then? –I'm starving and have been looking forward to dinner all day….
Bani smiled gingerly in his direction and took a hold of his arm, tugging lightly on it while leading him inside with the rest of her family….
****************************************************************************
It was the beginning of Fall when Jai asked Bani for their first outing together. He wanted to as he noticed she rarely ever went out anywhere, always either going to school or staying at home. He immediately made plans for lunch and denied to give into any of the excuses she gave him.
Jai: I'll pick you up after you're finished with school and we'll go somewhere nice to eat…
Bani shook her hands at him in refusal and began to futilely give him another excuse when Jai took a solid grip over her hands and silenced her…
Jai: There's more to life than just going to school and staying at home, you know (admonishingly) …
And it was settled. Bani reluctantly informed him when she would be done with school and he took time out to see her… He was just on his way over to picking her up from the school when he received a call from Roshini. She complained to him that she never got to see him as he was always busy and rarely ever had time for her. He tried soothing her and telling her that he would take her out tomorrow but she was adamant and refused to listen to any of his talks. She then revealed that she would be leaving to Dubai for a month with her family and that she wanted to see him before she did. Reluctantly and unwillingly, he suggested that she join him and Bani for lunch as a last option. That seemed to cheer her up as she quickly agreed and made plans to meet them.
He pulled over to the school and spotted Bani outside immersed in a group of other girls who seemed to be suggesting something that she was politely refusing to. On seeing him, she turned her attention from them and smiled gleefully in his way. He returned it and watched her excuse herself kindly and walk over to his car. She opened the car door and let herself in.
Jai: What was that about?
He indicated to the group of girls who were beginning to leave. She followed his gaze over to them shortly before returning it over to him. She softly shrugged and explained briefly about it.
Jai: Well if they're your classmates why didn't you agree to go? They seemed that they really wanted for you to come along and spend time with them….
She shook her head disdainfully and pointed at him afterwards. He gave her a look at this.
Jai: Don't use me as an excuse. I would have cancelled our plans if you wanted to go.
Bani hurriedly shook her head in refusal and explained to him that she preferred to go with him out to lunch rather than those girls. He didn't quite understand why but nodded his head understandingly anyways. He wondered if this usually happened—classmates inviting her to go out and her refusing. After all, why is it that she distances herself from everyone?
As he began to drive off from the school he remembered what he had to tell her…
Jai: Before I forget, I invited Roshini to lunch with us…. You remember Roshini, don't you?
Seeing Bani nod her head in acknowledgement, he carried on.
Jai: She's leaving to Dubai for some time and wanted for us to spend some time before she left. I don't really have any other time to give to her so I suggested that she come along. You don't mind do you?
Bani sweetly smiled and let him know that she didn't mind and thought it was wonderful that she would finally be meeting his girlfriend. Though, he didn't miss the apprehensive look on her face that she wore throughout the rest of the drive…..
*****************************************************************************
"Jai darling, I've missed you so much!" his girlfriend exclaimed as she brought her arms around the back of his neck and kissed him on his lips. As she withdrew from him, Jai caught Bani uncomfortably looking the other way. When he now looks back on it, he should have realized the tense environment created once Roshini entered the cafe. Yet this thought back then completely passed him….
He courteously pulled out a chair for her and sat down in his own seat as she took it. He looked over to Bani who sat across him and smiled, hoping to create the mood light. They had gotten to the cafe
ten minutes before and were having a lovely time—though when Roshini walked in through the door and approached them, he noticed her growing a little quiet… She feebly returned the smile.
Jai: Bani, this is Roshini…. Rosh, this is my friend, Bani. She's Daksh's sister…
Roshini: Yes, you told me. (hastily) It's great to see you—Bani, was it?
Jai watched Bani perk up on being acknowledged and softly nod her head in agreement. She smiled endearingly at Roshini, yet it faded as his girlfriend turned away from her and acted as if she didn't exist anymore.
Roshini: Oh Jai, I'm famished! Did you order anything yet?
Jai: Sandwiches and some soda.
Roshini: Jai, you know I hate soda. And really, sandwiches?
Jai: (explaining) Well Bani and I both wanted a sandwich and I assumed that you'd be alright in having one too. But I can order something else…
Roshini: (patting his cheek, smiling widely) A salad would be wonderful…
And so he had gone to change the order a little and returned only to be hogged by Roshini and her endless talks. Time to time he would glance over in Bani's direction and see her gloomily looking around the cafe in a disinterested manner. She was obviously bored and he felt terrible about it. Often he would try and pull Bani into the conversation but Roshini someway and somehow pushed her out of it. Finally he had enough and gently brought this up to his girlfriend's attention….
Jai: Rosh, you do know that Bani is here… It wouldn't hurt to talk to her as well…. I'd like for my girlfriend and friend to get along…
From the corner of his eye he saw an alerted Bani switch her focus back onto him and Roshini rather than fiddling with her food or stirring her coke with the straw.
Roshini: … Well what's the use in that? –She can't even talk….
Stunned, Jai sat staring at Roshini speechless for a few seconds before turning over to look at Bani. Her whole face had turned as white as a sheet of paper and slowly tears began to build in her eyes. He felt himself freeze and unable to say anything to her at that moment—the hurt lingering on her face haunted him. Before he knew it he watched her quickly excuse herself to go the bathroom and storm off… He was sure he had heard a muffled sob as she left.
His hand rolled into a tight fist as suddenly a burst of anger surged inside of him, one that burned wildly. He turned to stare at a nonchalant Roshini who didn't feel the least bit of regret for what she had done. She went to sipping on her chilled water. He roughly took it out of her hands, startling Roshini who turned on him and demanded…
Roshini: Jai, what the hell was that for?
Jai: I should be asking you that instead, Roshini. What is wrong with you? How could you even think about behaving like that with Bani? (fury present in his voice)
Roshini: I only said what was true Jai. You and your little mute friend can't blame me for that. (coldly)
Jai: (stunned by her answer) … You… You are unbelievable. How can you be so inconsiderate and rude? Bani is my friend! And I won't tolerate you behaving like this with her –Just because she can't speak doesn't make her any less than you and me Roshini! Even she's a human being. She has feelings. And you just hurt her with what you had said.
Roshini: What is she going to do about it? –Go complain about what a horrible person I am? News flash Jai, the girl can't speak! It doesn't matter. So why should it matter to you so much? –You know for the past few months all I ever heard about is her! All you ever do is go spend time with her and Daksh! You never have time for me! But you can go ahead and dedicate it to some lame girl?!
Beyond enraged, Jai stood up from his seat and roughly pushed his chair aside. He kept his eyes firmly on Roshini, glowering down at her.
Jai: Bani may not be able to speak—But there isn't any need for words when getting to know her. She's a bright, sweet, and beautiful girl that doesn't need to deal with crap with the likes of you or other people like you! I understand her and like her just the way she is! And if you can't accept her simply because she can't speak, then we're through… I don't want to have to put up with such a narrow minded woman.
Roshini stood up from her chair as well and met her eyes directly with his.
Roshini: You're breaking up with me because of that girl?
His first instinct was to deny her, tell her that it had nothing to do with Bani and simply it was because of the woman she really is—but something inside of him made him say instead…
Jai: Yes… (firmly)
He saw as his answer shut Roshini for a moment and troubled her greatly. She then recovered by angrily demanding…
Roshini: What's so special about her, huh? That you can go ahead and throw away our relationship for her?
Jai: …. Everything about her is special. You just fail to see it. (bites back)
With that, he walked away after throwing a few bills on the table, not caring at all to look back even once. And that was the last and final time Jai had ever seen Roshini Chopra, his ex-girlfriend….
*****************************************************************************

"Please Bani, open the door… Let me see you…. I want to see you….," he begged as he hopelessly rested the side of his face against the bathroom stall in the women's bathroom. So far he had gotten three shocked reactions and a couple of yellings as well but he refused to budge. Not until he took Bani with him….who was hiding in the stall, crying to herself and stubbornly not coming out from it.

Jai: …. I'm sorry…. I'm so sorry…. I didn't know Roshini would behave like that…. If I had known… I would have…. I would have….

What would he have done? Would he have dumped her back then as well? That too, for Bani? He reassured himself that it had nothing to do with Bani and that is was Roshini's attitude that was behind the reason. He always knew of Roshini to be a little rude. It didn't bug him so much before though, mainly because she was never rude to anyone he knew. But seeing her inexcusable behavior towards Bani, it angered him beyond limits. The tears that he had seen in her eyes continued to taunt him….

He remembered Daksh's words and felt them rushing back to him… "I didn't want you to treat her any differently like other people we've come across," he had said to him the first time Jai met Bani. He now understood the depth in those words… The worry and anxiety Daksh went through in keeping his sister's disability away from him. His friend was concerned that he would react in a similar way to how Roshini had. That he wouldn't be so understanding…. He now realized that not everyone is so kind… that there were more of people like Roshini Chopra around… Ones that the Dixits unfortunately had to cross with.

Jai: (sighing, pleading softly) Bani… please… open this door… Forget Roshini….and forget what she had said….. Her words should not matter to you. She is a narrow-minded person who's incapable to understand and never will. She is just one of those unfortunate people with a small brain…. You should only care about what your family thinks…. They love you just the way you are…. And….and so do I Bani…. (adding softly)

In return he only heard silence… not even one small sniffle coming from her. He backed off from the door and exasperatedly said, "Come on yaar, please just" – Jai stopped midway into his sentence as he heard the switching of the lock and saw the door slowly creak open….

Bani appeared before him, looking so vulnerable and hurt that it nearly pierced him inside. Her lashes were wet and eyes were swollen red from her crying… her rosy cheeks were wet as well and her small pink lips quivered as she stared up at him with those gorgeous doe eyes of hers. Jai didn't waste a second more in taking her into his arms and soothing her. She broke into another quiet sob and clung onto him in his embrace. She then began to use her hands to express her remaining feelings while still resting her head against his chest…

Jai: I know… She's a horrible woman… and we won't see her again, I promise.

She motioned something else to what he answered to with…

Jai: I don't know about her ending up living a lonely, loveless life and later rotting in hell—but I sure do hope so too.

Jai chuckled at her silly curse and felt her giggle a little as well. He stared down to look at her and found her glancing up back at him. For a moment they were both perfectly still and quiet until Jai caressingly tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear that managed to come out…. He then wiped the remainder of her tears.

Jai: Come on… Let's go somewhere else. I'll take you wherever you want… What will it be?

She moved out from his embrace and fixed her appearance by patting down her hair and wiping away the wetness from her face. She sniffled and smiled the same old beautiful smile of hers while cutely demanding for some ice cream. He grinned at her small plight…

Jai: Sure, whatever you say madam.

He gestured for her to walk on out from the bathroom but felt her holding him back by gripping onto his arm. Jai looked over to her and saw her watching him intently before coming close and pointing to herself….taking his nose into her fingers….wiggling it… and then pointing to him on his chest…

He smiled lightly at her while leading her out from the restroom….
*****************************************************************************

Jai was surprised the next day when he met his friend who thanked him for the outing he took Bani on the day before.

Daksh: She said she had a really great time. I've never seen her so happy before. She rarely ever goes out. But I'm glad you took her yesterday.
Jai: (sheepishly) Oh…. Er… Don't mention it. I-I'm glad she enjoyed herself.

Daksh smiled and patted him on his back. Jai was left to wonder to himself. He was absolutely sure Daksh would murder him for what happened at the caf, but here he was acting as if nothing had happened. Did Bani not tell him about Roshini? And if not, why?

Daksh: So… You planning on doing something special with Roshini since she's leaving soon?

Jai's faced darkened on the mention of Roshini and he knew his friend noticed as he curiously asked…

Daksh: What happened? Did I say anything wrong?
Jai: (roughly) No… You didn't… I'm just not seeing Roshini anymore. We broke up yesterday…
Daksh: (puzzled) But why? I thought your relationship with her was going well…
Jai: I did too until I realized what kind of person she really is…
Daksh: (further confused) What do you mean by that?

Jai looked to his side at his friend and decided that he didn't want to get into the issue with him. He simply brushed it off by saying…

Jai: We're just two different people, Daksh… It wouldn't have worked out in the end anyways….

He was grateful to his friend for letting the matter go instead of pursuing it. Daksh nodded while understandingly replying, "Okay."

Chapter 3:

Fall had slowly faded and Winter took over its course bringing the chilled weather along as well. Already love was in the air as Valentines was just around the corner. Everywhere Jai went he saw hearts, flowers, chocolates, and couples so hopelessly in love that it made him uncomfortable. He only grew more uncomfortable as his friend invited him for dinner on the made-up holiday.

Daksh: Me and Annie were thinking we could double date with you… How does that sound?

He choked on his can of soda and stared at him with disbelief.

Jai: You want me to come along with you and Annie's date for Valentine's?
Daksh: Yeah, it'll be fun don't you think?… but obviously with a date of your own.
Jai: (eyeing him) Why would you want me to tag along when it's the day for lovers?
Daksh: (shrugs) Well me and Annie always spend it alone together…. We thought perhaps this time we could spend it with some other company. So of course we thought of you first. We already made reservations at this nice restaurant for four. Come on yaar, say you'll come.
Jai: But who would I bring?
Daksh: You'll find someone. You're a good looking guy who has women falling for you all of the time. I'm pretty sure it won't be any trouble.
Jai: (grim) I don't know… I'm not really in the mood. To be honest, this holiday is really getting on my last nerves.
Daksh: Yeah, that's common for most single people to experience… (smirking)

Jai glared at Daksh and muttered to him that he would think about it. It was two days away from Valentines that he went over to Daksh's house like usual and spent his time watching TV with Bani whilst Daksh was busy working in the study and Annie left to the store to return with groceries. They were watching some English film that Bani persuaded Jai into who was against it from the beginning. It was a coincidental to see Valentine's occurring in it and Jai couldn't help but notice a dreamy look cross Bani's face. She was so transfixed into the scene that he had to snap his fingers in front of her eyes to grab her attention. When he did have it, he began in telling her what was on his mind…

Jai: (clearing his throat, lightly) So Valentine's is on Friday…

He saw her nod her head excitedly with a sweet grin. He couldn't help but smile a little himself at her….

Jai: You have any plans? .... Or a Valentine at least?

Her whole face turned as red as a tomato by his question and she shyly shook her head to deny it. He propped up on his pillow and stared at her curiously.

Jai: How come?

He watched as she moved her hands about and he gave her an incredulous look.

Jai: No one asked you?

Bani nodded her head. He thought about this for a moment, wondering who on earth wouldn't ask Bani but formulated an answer for himself.

Jai: (smirking) I bet the boys your age are afraid of your Bhaiya….

She smiled as well yet shook her head, shooting down this idea. He frowned but decided to let it slide.

Jai: Well listen… since you have no plans of your own and don't have a valentine…. And I don't have one as well… Let's say this year we'll both be each other's valentine… How's that sound?

He watched her raise a brow on hearing this and later try not to give into her surfacing laughter. She said something with her hands that he slightly took offense to…

Jai: No I'm not kidding…. What makes you think I'm kidding?

She continued to giggle as she pointed to herself, then to him, and finally joined her hands together. Jai nodded his head, showing her that he understood what she was saying but still he didn't see what was so funny.

Jai: Exactly… We are friends… But who ever said that friends can't be valentines?

Bani shrugged and prodded him to continue with what he had to say…

Jai: … A friend of mine invited me to double date with him and his date… And well—since I have no one to take I'm asking you… (ends sheepishly)

She motioned something else to him.

Jai: Well that friend actually happens to be your brother…. (grinning)

She smacked her forehead and wildly expressed a few other things to him.

Jai: It won't be awkward.  We spend time together all of the time—So it won't be much different.  And yeah so what if they're your bhaiya and bhabhi—I'm going to be your date for the evening so I'll be the one giving you company.

Suddenly Bani perched her chin onto her knee while hugging her legs together and smiled goofily at him. He looked at her strangely for this…

Jai: (cautiously) What?

She explained herself to him and Jai glared at her for teasing him like this.

Jai: What do you mean if you decide to refuse? This isn't funny Bani… Just say that you'll come. And if you still refuse, I'll drag you to the restaurant against your will… So really when you think about it, you have no choice.

She giggled at his expense and calmly soothed him by agreeing. She sealed it by pinching him on his cheek and Jai smiled in relief. Yet that didn't last too long when she informed him that he would have to ask Daksh….
****************************************************************************

Fortunately to him Daksh didn't mind the idea. In fact, he didn't look much into it—which confused Jai at that point of time. So on Friday Jai went over to the Dixits and knocked on the door after hastily pulling his black coat over himself. Daksh opened the door, dressed handsomely in a tux himself.

Daksh: Thirty minutes late my friend. You have a case of two angry girls waiting for you.
Jai: D*mn… Which one is the most angry do you suppose?
Daksh: Well I would say my wife but that's only because of our booked reservations…. But who do you think is really?
Jai: (miserably answers) It's my date isn't it?
Daksh: (smiling) I knew you were a smart man….

Daksh patted him on his back as he entered in through the door and reluctantly walked towards the living room. And just as his friend said, two beautiful angry women were waiting for him—sitting down on the couch with their arms folded across their chest. He nervously tugged on his tie and approached them.

Annie: (dangerously) You better have a good excuse Walia for making me thirty minutes late to my date at the Watergate restaurant…
Jai: (licking his lips) Well…. funny that you say this… because I do….

He watched both Bani and Annie raise their brows at this, wordlessly prodding him to carry on….

Jai: I … er…. Well I actually…. sort of…. fell asleep…. (ends meekly, rubbing the back of his neck)

For a moment none of the girls said anything, remaining to stay still until Annie turned to look over at Bani and nodded…

Annie: Go on Bani, no one's holding you back anymore…

Bani stood up from her seat and immediately jerked her finger in his chest, pushing him back and flying her hands about in his face.

Jai: Ouch—No, I didn't forget about the dinner and no of course I didn't forget about you! I wouldn't just ask you to go with me and then not come, Bani.

She angrily moved her head in the other direction, not heeding to any of his words. Jai sighed and then slowly withdrew something from behind him. He brought them into her view and watched as her eyes were captivated by the sight of them. Her gaze met his over the bouquet of pink roses (her favorite color) and saw them soften while looking back down at them. She took them into her hands and adoringly gazed at them while taking in the fragrance of the flowers.

Jai: (smiling softly) That's another reason why I'm late… I went out to get flowers for you….

Her eyes switched back onto him and to his relief she actually smiled. She tenderly patted his cheek, silently without any movement of her hands—forgave him. He returned it and placed his hand onto her lower back while signaling to Daksh that they should head on over to the restaurant. As they walked to the door, Bani continued to admire her flowers and only looked up once Jai whispered into her ear, "Did I tell you yet that you look beautiful in that white dress?" Shyly and with blushed cheeks, she shook her head. Jai chuckled at her as she pointed to him and made an "okay" gesture with her hand.

Jai: You know exactly what to say to make a guy feel great about himself….

Bani giggled cutely and allowed him to lead her over to the car where he politely opened her car door and closed it after herself. He made his way to the passenger seat of the car where his best friend glanced at him with a small smile of his own.

Daksh: Nice save….

He spoke softly so only Jai could hear. Jai grinned back….

Jai: You think she'll notice that I took them from your next door neighbor's yard?

Daksh simply laughed at his expense as an answer while pulling out from the driveway and driving out of sight….
***************************************************************************

Dinner was a great affair as the four of them thoroughly enjoyed their dinner together and chatted the evening away. Jai later did not regret his decision for agreeing to come along. Bani was proving to be a sport and wonderful company—not that she isn't always. She played along with the idea of being a couple with Jai when asked by the waiter. Jai could not stop laughing at the gestures she would make that would affirm the "fact" to their serving waiter.

After their meals, a clutter of waiters arrived at their table with a wheeled table containing a chocolate cake with seventeen lit candles gleaming on it. The waiters' singing grabbed the attention of people around who stared at their table. Bani's eyes sparkled at the view of it and she was left speechless by the surprise. Jai watched her turn to her brother out of expectation. Daksh though smirked at her.

Daksh: It wasn't my idea Pari…. Nor your Bhabhi's…

He added as Bani looked over to Annie. Jai looked on as Bani finally turned to meet him and wore an expression of slight astonishment with a mix of gratitude. He stared down at his hand once she placed her own over it….  He glanced back up at her and smiled gently.

Jai: … (explaining himself) …. Your birthday's four days away…. And I won't be here for it… So I wanted to celebrate it with you before I leave to London the day after tomorrow….

He watched her face crumble on the reminder of this and sadly nod her head a few seconds later, showing him that she remembered. Jai had gotten the news from his father three weeks ago that he would be sent to London to finish his MBA as it will be convenient since Uday wishes for Jai to take over their company there and that Jai was reaching the end of completing his degree. He felt sad himself for leaving behind his friends and family, but business was business and he knew this from the beginning.

Jai: Hey yaar… don't do this to me. If you start crying now, I will have the waiters take the cake back and I will instead order for a simple vanilla cake with yellow bread…. Is that what you want?

She blinked away her forming tears and immediately shook her head in refusal. Daksh, Annie, and Jai all laughed at her as she meekly smiled back.

Jai: Blow out the candles Bani….

He prodded her on and saw her change her gaze from him over to the cake and close her eyes with a eager look. A moment later a sweet smile spread across her face and she opened her eyes a second before she blew out all seventeen candles….

Everyone clapped around as she cut the cake. She took a piece into her hands and turned to Jai, bringing it into his view. She brought it near his mouth and silently indicated for him to eat it. Jai wrapped his own hand around hers and brought the piece forth, biting into it before serving it to her as well. A smile made its way onto his lips as she pecked him sweetly on his cheek afterwards….
*****************************************************************************

Daksh: You won't forget us when you're there, will you?

His friend asked him jokingly after he hugged him tight. Jai grinned cheekily and gave a small shrug.

Jai: Who knows… It's London, I'm sure I'll meet other people…
Annie: You devil….

Jai's grin only grew wider. He caught a glimpse of his rolex watch and gave them a simmered look.

Jai: I've got to go if I want to board the plane on time…

Giving him a final pat on the back, Daksh nodded his head at him understandingly.

Daksh: You take care dost… And call once you get there.
Jai: I will….
Annie: Oh Jai, I can't believe you're actually going…

She exclaimed and brought her arms around him, hugging him sadly. Jai hugged her back and after withdrawing from her embrace, gathered his bag securely onto his shoulder. He sighed and looked at his two friends when he caught the lingering form of Bani standing behind them…

Jai: Bani….

She stepped forward with glistening eyes and lowered her gaze to the floor. He lifted her chin up with his finger and met them. Wordlessly, he pointed to himself… took a grip onto her nose… wriggled it fondly… and finally pointed to her…. A tear slipped from her eye as she gave him a feeble smile and repeated the act. He looked at her long for one last time before taking a hold of her hand and pulling her into his arms. He smothered his face into her silky tresses and murmured into them, "I'm going to miss you…" She nodded her head and pointed at his chest, telling him the same. Jai loosened his hold around her and ruffled her hair in an endearing manner before taking a good look at all of them and wishing them goodbye….

As he sat in his car and drove out from the driveway, he watched his friends waving him goodbye and wondered if he were to come back if things would remain the same as before….

Chapter 4:

Summer 2000

Six months into his stay at London, Jai finished his MBA and joined his father's business. He took in charge of the company with Aparajit Deb as an advisor, one of his father's most trusted employees, and settled well into the new environment during the rest of that year. But it would never beat his life back at home in India. Time to time he would relive his old memories and sigh at the state he was in; living in a foreign country thousands of miles away from home. Like he promised, he continued to keep in touch with the Dixits. He phoned and emailed them regularly, catching them up with the events of his life as they did with him.

It was midway in July when he received good news in the mail'. His younger sister, Jigyasa, was going to get married to his childhood friend, Aditya Bali. He was happy' happy for his best friend and sister, but happy as well as this would prove to be a good excuse to come back home'

Jai found himself breaking this news to Bani first' He remembered emailing her right away, telling her that he would be coming back to India, and that he couldn't wait to see her and everyone again. It was some time later when he finally told Daksh himself. He quickly booked tickets for a two day stay, as this was as much as he could afford being kept away from work. But he was excited nonetheless'
*****************************************************************************

Jai arrived in Mumbai on the day of his sister's sangeet and received a rather warm welcoming from his family. He settled back into his home and some time later decided to drop by his old friend's house as he was in India for only a limited time. Once he knocked on the door, he expected for Bani to open it as usual, but was surprised to see Daksh opening it for him instead.

Daksh: God, it's so great to see you again dost' Come in.

He exclaimed after welcoming him back and leading him into his home. They met Annie in the living room who earnestly greeted Jai with a friendly hug. They sat and caught up with one another for a few minutes  in an excited chatter when Jai finally spoke what was on his mind since the moment he stepped into their house'.

Jai: Where's Bani? ' I don't see her anywhere.
Daksh: Pari isn't here right now, Jai' She's been gone for almost a week now.
Annie: She went onto one of her university trips to Goa.

Jai slowly digested this information, finding it a little startling as he remembered Bani as the same old girl who rarely went out anywhere.

Jai: Really?
Daksh: (catching onto his disbelief) Yes, really. I know what you are thinking and we were a little surprised before too. She hardly goes anywhere.
Annie: She didn't want to go at first but after Rano persuaded her, she changed her mind.
Jai: Rano? ' Who's Rano?
Daksh: Rano is one of Bani's friends and classmate.
Annie: Those girls are inseparable now. They never go anywhere without each other'.
Jai: (confused) How come I've never heard of her before?
Daksh: Bani's never mentioned her to you?

Jai shook his head in a "no". He turned to look over to Annie who began to speak.

Annie: Well Bani actually met her a few months after you left to London. Rano moved here from Mount Abu and before we knew it those girls become into the best of friends.

Jai didn't know why, but he felt a little irritated on hearing this. He had never heard about Rano nor remembered her from any of his conversations with Bani, whereas he always told her everything. In a way, he was feeling threatened by this Rano' a girl whom he had never met and managed to take his place in Bani's life while he was away.

Jai: (expressionlessly) Oh'. That's great for her then'. She's becoming more open now' That's good news.
Daksh: Yes, it is.
Jai: '. Will she not be here then for the wedding? 'I was hoping to see her before I leave again.
Annie: No, she will be here. She'll arrive tomorrow morning and attend the wedding.
Daksh: Besides, Jigyasa would kill her if she missed out on her important day'.

An hour later of chatting, Jai left back home with disappointment. He was eagerly hoping to see Bani again only to see that she wasn't there. He would have to wait till the next day'.
*****************************************************************************

Jai was woken up the next morning by the loud ruckus occurring below his room on the ground floor of the house. He changed and quickly got ready for the day to help out in any way for the event of the evening. After a few hours or so, he was ordered to get ready by his mausi and dressed handsomely in a designer black suit with a silk black dress shirt underneath with a couple of buttons undone. He was changed just in time to see guests swarmed all over the front hall of the Mansion as he walked down the set of stairs. Later, he spotted his best friend and his wife entering in through the front doors with an elegantly wrapped present, both respectfully dashing in their own attires. He made a movement to greet them but was held back once his Mausi caught a hold of his arm and bombarded him with tasks to complete.

It was only after the bharat arrived that Jai was able to locate Daksh again, who like him, stepped forward to join their best friend, the groom. They chatted and teased with Aditya, who grinned like a monkey and blushed throughout. It was when he thought he saw her that Jai's strong urge to tease his friend mercilessly faded'..

His attention was captured as his eyes caught a glimpse of a young girl's backside, her skinny frame draped in a lovely yellow saree, and long silky hair resting against her back. He didn't know why, but something inside of him had leapt on the sight. He, though, judged that it perhaps had to do with the fact that it had been over a year since he had seen her. That was all, nothing more'.

Jai excused himself and left his two friends behind by walking forward to his intended destination. He watched her closely as she silently listened to her friend, who stood before her, socialize with her. Quietly, without any words, he placed both of his hands onto her shoulders and carefully turned her around to face him. The grin on his face that played on his lips just moments before disappeared as he stared into the girl's face'. not his girl'. not his Bani'. He let his hands loosen from his grip on her shoulders and was just about to apologize until he was cut off by the excited girl's voice, who unfortunately he knew.

"Oh Jai, I'm so glad to see you!" she screamed out of delight as her long, slender arms made their way around his neck to pull him into a hug. He awkwardly allowed her to do so and uncomfortably drew back immediately, not allowing her the pleasure to take in the embrace.

Jai: Err.. Hi, Pia'. How are you?

He unwillingly asked her out of politeness. Pia Chopra, nineteen, is his best friend, Aditya's second cousin whom he always had the bad luck of bumping into every possible chance. The girl clearly was enchanted by him for ages, ever since he knew Aditya. And she would do just about anything to be near him'.

Pia: Oh I'm the same old'But what's with you? How are you doing? And how is London?

She asked with so much enthusiasm that Jai swore if he were to go deaf, he would sue. He was alarmed by her sudden flirtatious touch on his arm and chest. As well as doing anything to be near him, she made it a must to touch him at all times. He looked back at her and gave her a slight, stiff smile while gently shaking off her hand from him.

Jai: I'm the same old too'. Nothing new.
Pia: (disbelief) Oh come on now Jai, you live in London for God's sake! How can nothing be new? You must have something to tell!

While Pia rambled on for some time of nothing in particular, Jai cursed her for having tricked him in this way. Pia, who always adorned her hair short, suddenly had the wish to grow it out in the beginning of Winter'stating that the time for long hair had triumphed. Again disappointed, he felt a numbing sensation build inside of him. When would he see Bani?

To this day Jai is still unable to figure out how he managed to get away from Pia, who literally always drew her claws onto him'refusing to ever let him go. But he had'. He managed to escape. He gave a sigh of relief, relishing on the state of being free until he unwarily bumped into someone in front of him.

"You handsome devil, are you intentionally out to get me?" he recognized a familiar voice question him. He grinned ear to ear as he met Annie's eyes'. perhaps she would know where Bani was.

Jai: Of course' I can't resist a moment not to harass such a beautiful woman ' (meeting her playful tone)
Annie: You watch it mister, I am married.
Jai: Is that supposed to mean something?
Annie: Yes, it means that my husband will kick your sorry a**'. (smirking)
Jai: It's alright, I think I can handle him. I will just point out that Malika Arora is married and that will have him in a fit of tears.

Jai joined in on her laughter at her husband's expense.

Annie: Everything looks so great Jai'the decorations are marvelous.
Jai: It was all Jigyasa'no one else did anything really. She was really picky in wanting the wedding to be absolutely perfect.
Annie: Well it's coming along really nicely now'There are so many people'I've actually gotten lost twice now.
Jai: (hesitantly, casually) '. Speaking of people'. Where is Bani? I still haven't seen her yet. I've been looking around for her.

His spirits lowered as he saw an apologetic look form on his friend's face, seeming genuinely sorry about something. He took a guess of what that something was'.

Jai: (incredulous) She's not here '.. She's not here for my sister's wedding?
Annie: She was supposed to be returning this morning but the bus was delayed for weather reasons. There happens to be a storm occurring'' So instead '. She'll be coming tomorrow.
Jai: Tomorrow? 'But I'm leaving tomorrow'.
Annie: I know Jai, and I also know how much you've been wanting to see her'and believe me, she's been wanting to see you too. ' but the bus'
Jai: Annie, I may not see her for years from now'I don't know when I'll even have time to come back to India in the near future'
Annie: Jai, she most definitely will be here tomorrow morning! And your flight doesn't even leave until early afternoon! (trying to cheer him) You'll still be able to see her'

Jai calmed down from his stand and took this to consideration. He shouldn't have over reacted; he would still be able to see Bani before he left. But why was it that he felt so''restless?

Jai: (indifferently) I guess'.
Annie: Oh cheer up, you'll see her tomorrow bright and early. What a great way to start off your day, huh?

He slowly shared her teasing grin and forced himself to not revolve around the thoughts of Bani. For the rest of the evening he enjoyed the company of his friends and satisfyingly witnessed the marriage of his sister and best friend, binding them together as life companions'
****************************************************************************

The next morning he rose bright and early to settle a few things before his twelve o'clock flight back to London. He made plans to drop by Daksh's house afterwards, his last chance of seeing Bani before he left with no news of a return for a long while.

Daksh: I'm sure she'll be here any minute'.

His best friend commented as Jai paced back and forth in the living room. Jai turned to look at his two friends who stared back at him with a level of apology and sympathy.

Jai: You said that two hours ago'. Where is she now?
Annie: We don't know Jai'Rano called earlier and said that she would be back around nine.

Jai scowled and returned back to his pacing. He couldn't believe that this was happening to him. He had written to her in advance, telling her of his visit, and she wasn't here. He had missed her over the past year'remembering their outings and time together. She had become into someone very important in his life. Not just as one of his best friends, but also in a way'. another sister whom he grew to be overprotective about and care very much for. He was looking forward to seeing her only to receive disappointment.

Ten minutes flew by into his fevered pacing until he caught a glimpse of the time from his watch and cursed to himself.

Jai: My flight is at twelve and it's already eleven'.

He announced to them and met their gaze. For a long moment none of them spoke, all of them thinking the same thing'' that the time had come for Jai's return to London. Disappointment and misery filled inside of him, Jai tightened his hold onto his keys and without any words, hinted his need to leave.

Daksh: I'm sorry, dost'. She was supposed to be here.
Annie: Jai, is it possible for you to reschedule your flight? Do you really have to go now? (hopeful)
Jai: No, Annie' I can't. I need to get back to work'. I could only afford little time to come visit'. There are things I need to take care of back in London.

Again they all grew silent. He let out a sigh and looked at them. He managed to give them a small smile.

Jai: I should go' It was great seeing you guys again'.
Daksh: Come visit whenever you can'. We all really missed you.
Jai: I'll try'.

And in the next minute Jai seated himself into his car and stilled for a short moment before he inserted his key and started the engine. Throughout his drive to the airport, he wondered when he would be able to come back home again'.
***************************************************************************

When Jai retired to his study that night, he checked his email and scrolled through the mail he had only to find one in particular to his interest. He clicked on it and read it after it appeared onto the screen'.

Dear Jai,

Mujhe maloom hai ke tum baut gusse mein ho'. Aur main yeh bhi jaanti hoon ke yeh gussa mere wajah se hai'. Main dher se aaye hoon, na'. Mujshe gaalti hua baba' Maaf kardo? Loh'  main kaahn paakarke maafi maangti hoon'. Sorry' forgive me'. Mere trip kuch zyaada time laagya'.  Bus ko flat tire hua'. It was very inconvenient... because it stopped me from seeing you. ' Bhabhi told me that you left a minute right before I got home' If only I had reached sooner, I would have been able to see you again'. I am sorry that we weren't able to meet' especially since I don't know when you will ever come to visit again' It makes me sad and angry to think that I missed my only chance of seeing you again. I've missed you and was looking forward to you coming. I was coming for the wedding and was hoping to see you there'paar' tum to jaante ho ke kya hua'. Kher' hosakta ke tum mujhe maaf kardonge' tum to jaante ho ke main jaanbujker aisa nahi kiya' I have been waiting to see you '. Hopefully you will be able to come visit again soon'and I promise, if you do, I won't go and leave anywhere. I will wait for you. Take care and enjoy London. Don't work yourself like a dog like you always do. 'I have my sources. ;)

                                                                                     Bani

Jai smiled after reading her email and felt the feeling of homesickness grow in him. He hit the reply button and wrote back'.

Main tumhe maaf karta hoon sirf isliye kyon ki main jaanta hoon ke jab main wapas lotunga'tumhe baut ghaari maafi mangana parega' aur asaan bhi nahi hoga' You will have to make it up to me' aur waise bhi'I blame all of this on that friend of yours, Rano. Baut buri influence hai woh tumpar. Your bhaiya and bhabhi can praise her as much as they want, but I know the truth'that girl is the devil. Goa jaanliye kya zaroort thi? Couldn't she had found something else for you two do in Mumbai? And how could you never mentioned her to me? Daksh and Annie say you two are best friends now.

And what's this about sources? What sources? 'It's Pushkar, isn't it? I don't want you two talking behind my back. It's bad enough that I introduced you two'but now this is just getting ridiculous. That boy must be doing jasoosi for you, isn't he? I don't work like a dog. Don't listen to him. He only thinks I work like one because he barely works at all. All the idiot does is stand by the water cooler and flirt with all the women in the office. Ek number ka duffer hai woh. Aur tum mere baare mein chinta maat khar' I take care of myself. You don't need to worry.

Jai

p.s. Jigyasa is going to kill you for missing her wedding.

The next time he checked his email, he received'.

Somebody sounds jealous of Rano. She may be very close to me, but you will always mean much more. And it's not just Pushkar, it's Deb uncle too. So I actually do have a reliable source. =P

Bani

p.s. I know'..

He grinned and quickly wrote back to her. After sending his reply, he looked over to his phone and dialed a number. A few seconds later after hearing the person on the other line speak, he warned'.

Jai: You dog, what jasoosi are you doing for Bani?
**************************************************************************

Fall 2004

Four years had passed since Jai's last visit to India and during that point, he made the time useful for himself. He worked efficiently as the head of the company (or how Bani put it "as a dog"), bringing it to the heights of success, and earning himself name and recognition for his work. His father was proud and boasted about the success he accomplished. Uday's happiness was enough to make Jai feel satisfied with himself. But despite the five years he lived in London, it still didn't feel like home to him. To him he always viewed it as a foreign country, not his own. His home, his family, and his friends were all in India. And due to that reason, he confronted his father about a transfer. London was the place his father sent him to grow and learn, but he had done that. Jai was ready to come home.
****************************************************************************

He showed his boarding pass to the woman at the gate and politely returned the smile she flashed at him. "Enjoy the flight," she had wished him and he carried on through the steel door. He found his seat in first class and sat down after placing his travel bag in the compartment above. He made himself comfortable after taking out his laptop and having placed it on the extendable tabletop near him. A minute later a message box appeared on the screen and he smiled on seeing who it was from'

Pari_Rani: Hello mister, I thought you would be on the plane by now'.

She obviously knew all the details of his flight. His smile widened as he typed back'.

JWalia_101: I am' Koi shaaq?
Pari_RaniHain' I thought they do not allow you to use electronic devices while in the air'
JWalia_101: Well at present we are still on land'.
JWalia_101: The plane hasn't moved an inch yet. There are people still being boarded.
Pari_Rani: Ah'
JWalia_101: Waise, what are you doing on?
Pari_Rani: Kyon? I have other friends who I talk to'
Pari_Rani: You are not the only one.
JWalia_101: I highly doubt that'
JWalia_101: Who would want to be your friend?
Pari_Rani: You are so mean. I don't even know why I talk to you. Let alone, why I am friends with you.
JWalia_101: You had no choice, darling, because you had no one else. Anyways, who is coming to retrieve me from the airport?
Pari_Rani: No one, why? Were you expecting someone?
JWalia_101: You don't make very funny jokes, Bani.
Pari_Rani: Bhaiya, Bhabhi, Aditya Jiju, and Jigyasa Di are all going.
JWalia_101: And you?
Pari_Rani: Why would I tag along to greet a monkey? I am fine in staying home.
JWalia_101: Cut this monkey some slack. He has been gone for s years. Come yaar. It won't feel right without you.
Pari_RaniYou know I would love to and I even want to....
Pari_Rani: But I'm not home right now.
JWalia_101: Then where are you?
Pari_Rani: You won't be mad if I told you, would you?
JWalia_101: Why?
Pari_RaniBecause I am in Goa.
JWalia_101: Again? Rano put you up to this, didn't she? What is with that girl and taking you everywhere? You two already went to Goa, what is the need in going again?
Pari_Rani: Jai, it is our last year. Samjha karo'
JWalia_101: No, I don't want to understand. I am coming after so long and you are out somewhere else? This isn't fair, Bani.
Pari_Rani: Well how was I supposed to know you were coming, you Budu. You only told me yesterday. By then I was already in Goa.
JWalia_101: What happened in waiting for me?
Pari_Rani: I am waiting. Just in Goa. ;)
JWalia_101: Fine. Have fun in Goa with your stupid little Rano.
Pari_Rani: You are always so jealous of that girl.
JWalia_101: Why would I be jealous of that four-eyed bookworm?
JWalia_101: Anyways, I have to go. One of the flight attendants is staring me down like a hawk.
Pari_Rani: Why is that?
JWalia_101: He told me to turn off my laptop four times already. And the pilot just announced that we need to buckle up. Besides, I don't think I want to waste any more of my time talking to you.
Pari_Rani: Aww, I can't wait to see you too. Have a nice trip and cheer up because I will be back in five days! :)
JWalia_101: You suck.
JWalia_101: Bye.

He turned off his laptop and looked up only to meet the flight attendant's disapproving eyes, the same attendant from before who wouldn't stop glaring at him.

Jai: You're a good looking guy and all, but I'm sorry to say, I'm neither interested or go that way. (states gravely)

To his satisfaction, the employed man turned a color of bright red and instantly became embarrassed as a passing woman flight attendant overheard this and gawked at the man in sheer surprise.

"Really Robert, I had no idea'," she murmured to him in her English accent. The flight attendant, Robert, shook his head to deny Jai's statement and threw him an angry glance before storming off. That had been the highlight for the rest of his flight...
*****************************************************************************

The moment he stepped out from the plane and passed through the opening gate door, Jai instantly felt at home. The people, the language, and even the smell all made him feel at ease and welcomed. This was his country and home, where he belonged. He gripped onto his traveling bag and proceeded on over to his way after retrieving his other luggage.

He stopped in his tracks as he spotted a small crowd of familiar faces. A grin had made its way onto his face as he recognized all of them, despite how much they had changed over the years. His sister, Jigyasa, with her husband, Aditya, and Daksh along with his wife, Annie, all gathered around behind the line belt and his grin only grew on reading the sign Annie held in her hands. Welcome back home Jai... Finally!

Jai was welcomed warmly in hugs, kisses, and remarks about how he looked. Some said he got thinner, fitter, darker, lighter, handsomer, taller, or... just exactly the same. They all had their own share of opinions that he took no personal interest into.

Daksh: Four years man since I last saw you and you look great! Not doing so bad for an old man, I must say.
Jai: (grimaces) Daksh, I'm hardly as old as you are making me seem.
Jigyasa: Well according to mausi, bhaiya, thirty is actually seventy.
Aditya: Which is why she is arranging rishtas for you as we speak.

They all shared a laugh at his expense whereas Jai continued to remain grim. They all immerse Jai into light conversation, catching him up with things at home and asking him about London.

Annie: Jai, I am surprised you haven't asked about Bani yet. (mockingly questions)
Jai: Why would I ask about her?
Annie: That is all you ever asked during your last visit.
Jai: Well I know she is in Goa this time...(brushes off)
Daksh: Goa? (raises a brow) Pari told you she went to Goa?
Jai: Yes. Why?.... Isn't she? (confused)
Daksh: (looking thoughtful) If she is in Goa, then who is this standing right behind me?

To his surprise, Daksh stepped aside...revealing a lurking figure hiding behind him. He wasn't able to recognize her at first glance. She had transformed a lot from what she used to be. He had carried the same old image of her in him for the last five years. ... Those honey doe like eyes... long silky hair...skinny frame.... fair skin....and shy smile. Instead what he saw before him was a woman with tanned glowing skin, a slender frame with visible feminine curves, layered tresses that fell midway of her torso, brighter brown eyes, yet the same old unchangeable smile...

He spoke with disbelief after a few passing moments...

Jai: Bani?

She excitedly nodded her head and he watched a pool of happy tears reach her beautiful eyes. He softly chuckled from the off-guard surprise before quickly taking her into his arms and lifting her off of the ground.
